I recently watched a great film in IMAX theatres—Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon. Although Marty is a bit of a genre-bender, credited for a variety of films such as The Age of Innocence (1993), Shutter Island (2010), and Hugo (2011), he's better known for films that have shared themes of crime, cruelty, violence and corruption. Some of Marty's well-known films that carry his modern masculinity-character driven trademark include Taxi Driver (1976), Goodfellas (1990), Gangs of New York (2002), and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and as a historical western crime-thriller, Killers of the Flower Moon is not too far a deviation from his traditional work.

Based on David Grann's best-selling true-crime book, Killers of the Flower Moon tells the story of Osage tribe members and the murders inflicted upon them as a means of procuring their land, oil and the money that came with all the resources and mineral rights. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, Robert De Niro as William Hale, Lily Gladstone as Mollie Kyle-Burkhart, and features many more powerhouse performances by Brendan Fraser, Jesse Plemons and Louis Cancelmi. In Killers of the Flower Moon, Marty transports us to Oklahoma somewhere between 1910-192o, with the narrative focusing primarily on Osage member Mollie (formerly Kyle) Burkhart and her family from when they discover the crude oil to when most of Mollie's family and tribe members are brutally murdered.

The most heartbreaking aspect of Killers of the Flower Moon was the betrayal Mollie and her family endured at the hands of Mollie's very own husband Ernest George Burkhart. Although Ernest was, in someways, also a victim of his uncle William Hale's greed fueled depravity, Ernest made the decision to poison his wife, and betray his children and the family that welcomed him as their own. In return, Ernest and his prosecutor-uncle would have gained millions if they had achieved their goal, but not even that amount of money was worth the value of love and loyalty offered to Ernest by the Osage Tribe.

I loved many things about Killers of the Flower Moon; I loved the rich history, the educational value of the film, the beautiful cinematography by Rodrigo Prieto, the evocative performances, and the atmospheric element that made me feel as though I were witnessing everything firsthand—though I would not call this film a masterpiece by any means necessary. Yes the film was an important story to share with the world, and yes Marty did a wonderful job casting actors with actual Indigenous Heritage (unlike Twilight's casting of Jacob), but there were also a lot of moments that were drawn out, horribly paced, or excessively violent, which made the film a lot less special than it could have otherwise been. Killers of the Flower Moon has a runtime of 3 hour and 26 minutes and although the slow-pace of the film is meant to intentionally build up tension, Marty did not succeed at holding the attention of audience members for the films entire duration. Criticisms aside, I still think Marty cooked up a bit of a storm with Killers of the Flower Moon, and if the historical magnitude of the film isn't enough to convince you to give it a chance, perhaps take into consideration how emotionally compelling Lily Gladstone's
